World Oceans Day 2016

E-mail Print PDF

For ages, the oceans have taken care of us. The ocean is the heart of our planet. The oceans generate most of the oxygen we breath, they regulate our climate, and they feed us. However, our ocean and its resources are deteriorating and depleting as it faces increasing pressure from various types of pollution and over-exploitation. Business as usual scenarios for CO2 emissions could make the ocean up to 150% more acidic by 2100, placing the entire food chain and key ecosystems such as coral reefs under threat.

Healthy oceans, Healthy planet

World Oceans Day is a yearly event to celebrate and honor the bodies of water that join us all. The world ocean day theme for 2016 is Healthy oceans, Healthy planet. As a Small Island Nation Ocean Resource are very important to us and we depend on ocean resources. It is our duty to protect ocean resources for future generations. Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) is the mandated agency for prevention, reduction and control of marine pollution in Sri Lankan waters and protect marine resources. With the objective of above,To celebrate World Oceans Day 2016 MEPA has planned to conduct an awareness walks from Viharamahadevi Park to Galle Face, Colombo on June 08, 2016 as the main event of the Programme.
