Preparedness and Awareness Building Among School Children Public Officers and General Public

Oil spills and dumping of ship generated waste in ocean in causing a serious environmental and economic damage which has become a frequent occurrence. In the light of developments in maritime activities Sri Lanka faces a greater risk of oil spills. Thus the need to strengthen Preparedness, Awareness and Capacity building to meet such, risk is considered imperative.

Conduct of awareness programmes in various sections:
School Marine groups
Conduct Awareness Programmes
Develop exhibition Unit
Radio Programme
Distribution of awareness Materials

School Marine Groups

MEPA established school Marine Groups in more than 300 schools in the 7 coastal Districts of Hambantota, Matara, Galle, Kaluthara, Colombo, Gampaha and Puttalam and continued with the awareness programmes to educate school children. These programmes include workshops, meetings, activities and competitions were also conducted to improve knowledge and environment friendly attitudes among the school children.

Nature of the programme:
Target group : 25 group of children selected from grade 6, 7, 8, 9,
Program type :  Awareness programs - conduct seminars including lectures, Video clips, held Poster competitions.
Established Information Centers in 70 schools among 300 schools, with  collection of  details about information on Marine environment.(Leaflets, Magazines, maps, CDs’ ect.)

Awareness for Potential Polluters:

Conduct awareness programmes for fishermen via fisheries societies, Potential Polluters such as hoteliers.

Exhibition Unit:

Held exhibition stalls when necessary as Deyata Kirula, ect.

Radio Programme:

Every Sunday 15 minutes Radio Programme ‘Samuduru Asiriya’ broadcast on Commercial Service of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

Interviews with the professors and university lecturers are presented via this program.

These programs are famous among the school children.

Distribution of awareness Materials

Print and distribution of 5 types of leaflets in 3 languages (Sinhala, Tamil and English)
Quarterly publish ‘Samuduru Puwath’ Newsletter.
Yearly Publish ‘Sathsamumudura’ Magazine
